Corfu in November–March is a different island. The crowds disappear, hotel prices drop 50–70%, and the weather averages a comfortable 12–18°C — milder than London or Berlin in summer. Driving is the easiest it gets all year. This is the local view of off-season Corfu.
The weather, honestly
- November: 13–19°C, occasional rain (10–12 days/month). Sea still 19°C — surprisingly swimmable for the brave.
- December: 11–15°C, more rain (15 days). Christmas week busy with Greek visitors; Old Town festive.
- January: 9–14°C. Coldest month but mostly dry. Crystal-clear days perfect for hiking.
- February: 9–15°C. Wildflowers begin. Almond blossoms by mid-month.
- March: 11–17°C. Spring is genuine. Hotels begin reopening late month.
Snow on the island is rare and short-lived. Mount Pantokrator (906 m) gets a dusting maybe 2–3 times per winter, melting within hours.
What stays open
The myth: "everything closes in winter." The reality: Corfu Town is alive year-round (40,000+ permanent residents), and rural tavernas serve local clientele.
- Open all year: Corfu Town (Old + New), Old Perithia tavernas, all main roads, all major attractions (Achilleion, Mon Repos, fortresses), ferries to mainland.
- Open partially: Some Paleokastritsa tavernas, Sidari main strip (limited), Acharavi local tavernas.
- Closed: Most resort hotels in Sidari/Acharavi/Kassiopi, beach bars, Aqualand, boat trips from Paleokastritsa, most coastal beach tavernas.
Driving in winter — what changes
- Roads are empty. Drive from Corfu Town to Sidari in 45 minutes (60 min in summer). Paleokastritsa parking is free and plentiful.
- Watch for fallen olive branches after windy nights, especially on village roads.
- Wet roads: first rain after a long dry spell makes oils float to the surface. Drive gently the first 30 minutes of any rain.
- Mountain roads (Pantokrator, Lakones): Generally fine but occasionally affected by mist. Check the summit forecast before driving up.
- Daylight: sunset around 17:00 in December–January. Plan drives accordingly.
What to actually do
Hiking & nature
The Corfu Trail (220 km, north–south) is at its best November–April. Olive groves are working at full capacity, Lake Korission attracts migratory birds, the cliffs around Cape Drastis have fewer tourists.
Greek cuisine deep-dive
Winter is when Corfiot cuisine shines: heavier stews (sofrito, pastitsada), fresh seafood (octopus, sardines), mountain herbs in meals. Tavernas serve their best tables to locals; you're now a local.
Olive oil & wine
The olive harvest (mid-October to January) is on. Visiting a working olive press is impossible in summer (closed) but easy in November–December. Wineries are open with no tour groups — you get the owner's full attention.
Christmas in Corfu Town
Late December: festive lights on the Liston, choirs, traditional Christmas concerts at the Old Fortress. Greek Orthodox Christmas (December 25) is a meaningful family day; everything closes for 2 days. New Year's Day too.
Costs in winter (approximate)
- Rental car (Cat C, week): €175–225 (vs €350+ in August)
- Hotel (3-star, Corfu Town): €40–60/night (vs €100+ in August)
- Flights (London–CFU): Few direct routes; usually via Athens. Athens–CFU domestic is €35–60.
- Taverna meal: Same as summer, sometimes 10% lower.
Practical tips
- Layers: mornings cool, afternoons warm. Sun is intense even in December.
- Reservations: Mostly unnecessary except Christmas/New Year/Greek Easter.
- Currency: Some smaller villages cash-only. ATMs in any town.
- Heating: Most modern hotels and apartments have heating. Older properties may not — ask before booking.
- Greek Easter: if your visit overlaps, plan ahead. Corfu has uniquely famous Easter celebrations — see our Greek Easter guide.
Verdict
Winter Corfu is for travellers who want substance over sun. If your idea of a holiday is hiking olive groves, eating slow-cooked sofrito at empty village tavernas, and walking Corfu Old Town with no crowds, this is the most rewarding time of year. If you want to swim daily and lounge at beach bars, come in May–October.
