Most visitors come to Corfu in July and August. From a local perspective, that is often the worst choice. The shoulder months — May, June, September, early October — give you the same beaches, lower prices, fewer crowds, and surprisingly comfortable weather. This is our honest month-by-month breakdown.
April
Weather: 18-22°C average · Sea: 17-18°C (chilly) · Crowds: Very few
The island is waking up. Wildflowers everywhere, hills bright green, the ferries running but most resort hotels not yet open. Corfu Town is itself again — Greek visitors and locals dominate. Excellent for hiking, walking, sightseeing. Sea swimming requires courage; some hardy visitors do it. Most beach tavernas closed; village tavernas open.
Best for: Hikers, photographers, history-minded travellers, Easter visitors (Greek Easter is one of the best times to visit Corfu Town for cultural reasons).
May
Weather: 22-26°C average · Sea: 19-21°C · Crowds: Light
Our personal favourite month. Hotels are open. Tavernas are open. Beaches are clean and empty. Sea is just about swimmable for most visitors by mid-month. Roads are quiet — driving Pantokrator or Sidari at 14:00 is a pleasure, not a slog. Prices are 30-50% lower than July.
Best for: Couples, beach-and-explore mixes, photographers, anyone wanting Corfu without crowds. The pricing on our Peugeot 208 and Hyundai Bayon is at its lowest in May.
June
Weather: 25-29°C average · Sea: 22-24°C · Crowds: Moderate
The unofficial start of the high season. By mid-June the sea is genuinely warm, all tavernas open, crowd levels still manageable. Late afternoons can be hot but not oppressive. Excellent month for families — schools in Greece are out by mid-June, but UK and Northern European schools are still in.
Best for: Families, beach holidays, sailors, divers.
July
Weather: 28-32°C average · Sea: 25-26°C · Crowds: Heavy
Peak crowds, peak prices. Corfu Town is hot at midday — sightseeing best done in the morning or after 18:00. Beaches busy but manageable; the famous spots (Paleokastritsa, Sidari) are very busy. Driving times increase 20-30% due to tour bus traffic. Sea swimming is excellent.
Best for: Sun-and-sea pure beach holidays. Anyone who values warm sea over uncrowded streets.
August
Weather: 28-32°C average · Sea: 26-27°C (warmest) · Crowds: Maximum
Peak everything. Italian and Greek visitors join the Northern Europeans. Some popular tavernas need reservations 2-3 days ahead. Roads to popular beaches can be slow. Heat builds through the day — early starts (07:00 for breakfast, 08:00 to the beach) make a huge difference. Sea is at its warmest and calmest.
Best for: First-timers wanting peak Corfu experience, families with school-aged children locked into the August calendar, anyone who actively enjoys lively beaches.
September
Weather: 25-29°C average · Sea: 25-26°C (still warm) · Crowds: Moderate, dropping
The other locals\' favourite, alongside May. Sea retains August warmth, the crowds disappear after the first week, prices drop noticeably. Light wind in the afternoons makes everything more comfortable. Beach tavernas all open; Corfu Town is itself again by mid-month.
Best for: Couples, food-and-wine focus, anyone wanting "summer Corfu" minus the August chaos.
October
Weather: 21-26°C average · Sea: 22-24°C · Crowds: Light
The early half of October is one of the best-kept Corfu secrets. Sea still swimmable, weather still warm, crowds gone, prices at their lowest. Olive harvest begins mid-month. Some hotels start closing for winter. Beach tavernas in resort areas may close after 15 October; village tavernas remain open.
Best for: Off-season specialists, hikers, food enthusiasts (olive harvest), travellers wanting genuine local atmosphere.
November-March
Off-season. Most resort hotels closed. Corfu Town stays alive (year-round residents) but feels quiet. Mediterranean rain — frequent, sometimes heavy. Hiking is excellent if the weather cooperates; beach holidays are not the point. Few visitors except Greek-Easter pilgrims and winter-sun retirees.
The locals\' verdict
If you ask Corfiots when they would invite a friend, the answer is almost always:
- First choice: Mid-May to mid-June.
- Second choice: Mid-September to mid-October.
- Last choice: First two weeks of August.
The pricing on our rentals reflects this — same car costs 50-60% less in May/October than in August. Combined with cheaper flights and quieter hotels, an off-peak Corfu trip can cost 30-40% less in total. And the experience is, in our opinion, better.
