Corfu is one of the most child-friendly Greek islands. The beaches are calm, the food is mild and varied, the locals genuinely welcome children. With the right base and a rental car, a family of four can have an effortless week here.
The best base for families
Three areas stand out for families with young children:
- Acharavi — long sandy beach, shallow water, low-key resort feel, easy parking. Our top pick for families with toddlers.
- Roda (next to Acharavi) — same coast, slightly more compact, family hotels.
- Dassia / Ipsos — east coast, close to Corfu Town, calm water, plenty of family hotels.
Areas to avoid with very young kids: Paleokastritsa (steep paths to most beaches), Sidari (lively bar scene at night), Kavos (party town).
Best beaches for kids
Acharavi Beach
Long, sandy, shallow for 50+ metres out, very gentle waves. The whole length has tavernas and beach bars catering to families. Easy parking.
Roda Beach
Same characteristics as Acharavi — sandy, shallow, calm. Slightly more compact and walkable.
Marathias Beach
South-coast equivalent: long sand, very gentle slope, family tavernas. Quieter than the north coast.
Glyfada Beach
West coast, sandy, but with stronger waves than the north — fine for older kids, more challenging for toddlers. Excellent beach bars.
Avlaki Beach (near Kassiopi)
Pebble (so water shoes are useful) but very calm and beautiful. Single taverna right on the beach. Less crowded than the resort beaches.
Child seats and rental cars
Greek law requires children under 12 (or under 135 cm tall) to use an appropriate child restraint. We provide all four standard categories free of charge:
- Baby seat (≤13 kg): Rear-facing, for newborns and infants up to ~12 months.
- Child seat (≤18 kg): Forward-facing with 5-point harness, for 1-4 year olds.
- Booster with back (≤25 kg): For ~4-6 year olds.
- Booster cushion (≤36 kg): For ~6-12 year olds.
Just specify the child\'s age and weight when booking. We pre-install the seat so you can drive away immediately at the airport.
For groups of 5+, choose our 7-seater Peugeot Rifter. For 4 people with full luggage and child gear, the Fiat Tipo or a small SUV like the Hyundai Bayon is more comfortable than a compact.
Family tavernas (tested by us, recommended often)
- Acharavi: Roda Park Restaurant — playground, kid menu, calm garden setting.
- Sidari: Trilogia in Avliotes (5 min drive) — quiet, family-run, kids welcome with full attention from staff.
- Paleokastritsa area: Akrotiri in Liapades — family-friendly with sea views.
- Glyfada: Aelos in Pelekas — ample space, separate area for kids to play, traditional menu.
- Corfu Town: Pomo d\'Oro — relaxed garden setting in the Old Town, kid-friendly menu options.
Activities beyond the beach
- Aqualand water park (Agios Ioannis): One of the largest in Europe. Full-day attraction. Tickets ~€32 adults / €25 kids 5-12. Closes early October.
- Hydropolis water park (Acharavi): Smaller and quieter alternative for younger children.
- Achilleion Palace (Gastouri): Historic palace with gardens and statues. Easy walk for kids 6+.
- Mount Pantokrator drive: See our guide. Older kids love the panoramic view; toddlers nap.
- Boat trip from Paleokastritsa: 90-min sea-cave tour, ~€20-25/adult. Calm seas, suitable for kids 5+.
- Old Perithia village: Wander the cobbled lanes, eat at one of four tavernas. Great for older kids interested in history.
Things to skip with very young kids
- Kanoni in summer afternoons: Hot, crowded, mostly a viewpoint without much to do.
- Late-night Corfu Town walking: Cobbles, marble, tired toddlers. Visit in the morning instead.
- Paleokastritsa boat queues in August: 1-2 hour waits in full sun. Book ahead or visit early/late season.
- Mountain switchback drives in the heat: Many kids get carsick. Drive Pantokrator and Pelekas in cooler morning hours.
Practical packing tips
- UV swimwear / rash vests: Mediterranean sun is intense.
- Water shoes / aqua socks: Some beaches are pebble; sea urchins exist near rocks.
- Reusable water bottles: Tap water is potable across Corfu (we recommend filtering for taste, but it\'s safe).
- Insect repellent: Mosquitoes appear at dusk in low-lying areas. DEET-free options for kids work fine.
- Sun hats with neck cover: Essential for the beach and any walking sightseeing.
For the practical side of getting around, see our driving guide. For a balanced family itinerary, our 5-day plan works well — adjust by skipping Pantokrator if children are very young, and adding an Aqualand day instead.
