The famous Corfu beaches — Paleokastritsa, Glyfada, Sidari — get crowded in July and August. The good news: a 10-minute walk from any of them, and especially if you have a car to reach the more remote bays, you can find coves where you and 20 other people share the entire day. These are eight of our favourites.

1. Rovinia, near Liapades

Access: 10-min walk from Liapades parking · Difficulty: Easy/medium

One of the most photographed coves in Corfu, but the 10-minute walk down a dirt path keeps the day-trippers away. Crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs, no facilities — bring water and a beach umbrella. Park at the end of the road past Liapades village.

2. Stelari Beach

Access: 25-min hike from Liapades or by boat · Difficulty: Medium

Even quieter than Rovinia. The hike is steep in places — proper shoes essential. Reward: a tiny pebble cove framed by towering cliffs, often empty even in August. Most visitors arrive by boat from Paleokastritsa harbour (€20 round-trip), which is the easier option for families.

3. Porto Timoni (double beach), Afionas

Access: 15-20 min hike from Afionas village · Difficulty: Medium

The unique double-beach is on a narrow land bridge — calm water on one side, choppy on the other. Park at the entrance to Afionas, follow the signed path through the village, descend the hillside. Hike back uphill is the workout. Bring 2L of water in summer.

4. Mirtidiotissa Beach

Access: Drive + 5-min walk from Pelekas · Difficulty: Easy

One of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the island, surrounded by cliffs and pine trees. Famously a favourite of the late Prince Charles. Has a small beach taverna. Parking is at the top of the cliff — walk down the path. Quieter than neighbouring Glyfada.

5. Avlaki Beach, near Kassiopi

Access: Drive directly to the beach · Difficulty: Easy

A pebble bay just east of Kassiopi village, with a single excellent taverna (Cavo Barbaro). Crystal water, family-friendly, never crowded outside peak weekends. Park along the road. Pair with a swim at Kerasia 5 min away.

6. Erimitis area, north-east

Access: Hike from the road, varies · Difficulty: Medium

The Erimitis peninsula north of Kassiopi has a string of secluded coves accessible by short hikes. Akoli, Vromolimni and Markada bays are particularly beautiful and rarely busy. Park where you can pull off the coastal road and follow the trails down.

7. Halikounas Beach

Access: Drive directly · Difficulty: Easy

A wild stretch of sand on the south-west coast, adjacent to the Lake Korission nature reserve. Long, undeveloped, often near-empty. Excellent for a sunset swim. The dirt-track approach keeps casual visitors away.

8. Issos Beach (south end)

Access: Drive + walk · Difficulty: Easy

Issos is a 4 km beach. The northern end has the few tavernas; walk south for 15 minutes and you have your own dune-backed sand for the day. Park at the main entrance and stroll. The sand is fine and white, the water shallow and clear.
